New “disciples of Gutenberg":
Graduation in Hauchler Studio
After having graduated from the unique private school for printing, media and paper-converting in Biberach, Southern Germany, this year’s students from Lebanon and Singapore were „baptized as disciples of Gutenberg” according to a medieval German tradition. Gutenberg was the inventor of the art of printing. Equipped with the Hauchler Studio Diploma for extraordinary results as well as the traditional „letter of baptizing“ the trainees were ducked several times in the cold tub by master printers to symbolically wash away the sins of apprenticeship. Moreover, they had to do the medieval swear to lead a virtous life as disciples“ of the graphic art.
Since the beginning of the 70s, Hauchler Studio trains students from foreign countries in German as well as in English language. With generations of students from more than 116 countries, the school plays an important role as a pacesetter in vocational training. With its English-speaking training courses Print International, Hauchler Studio aims at skilled workers of the International Graphic industry.
The students have participated in a 1-year Training Course Print Total combining Offset Printing, Electronic Publishing and Basics of Management. Price-winner of the Offset Operating course 2011 was Mr. Wing Tai Tsui from Singapore with extraordinary results. The course has a practical approach with focus on training at machines taking into account state-of-the-art technology and techniques. It includes quality control and standardisation in offset and digital printing as well as press-make-ready, adjustments, trouble-shooting and optimizing the printing process, postpress, job planning, various software programmes and data handling as well as calculation and cost accounting jobs. The students have participated in many excursions and got an individual scope of training depending on their personal demand. A special high-light was the PrintMedia Seminar in Heidelberg and the visit of the Druck + Form in Sinsheim besides other excursions. Many former participants now have managerial jobs in their companies and use the training as a „springboard“ for their further career.

12.300 Media professionals from 116 countries were trained within 65 years in Hauchler Studio. The history of Hauchler Studio is a story of the development of the world of media, but also 12.300 stories of Hauchler-students who have become media professionals – and besides a history of design and art in combination with media technique. When 1946 Eugen Hauchler founded the school, we still had type-setters and letter printers as with Gutenberg. Today it ist the only state-approved vocational private school in Germany for the media industry. Hauchler Studio presents at an exhibition the development of media professions as well as of the school. Many former International students have sent their where-abouts to the students organizing the exhibition. Thank you for your help!
